Adamawa residents seek help as floods wreck havoc

ADAMAWA STATE, NIGERIA, October 10, 2023 — FLOOD EMERGENCY: URGENT CALL FOR GOVERNMENT AND STAKEHOLDER INTERVENTION IN JIMETA AND UNGUWAN TANA, ADAMAWA STATE

Jimeta, Adamawa State – The residents of the 80 Units Housing Estate in Jimeta and Unguwan Tana along Bakin Kogi are currently facing a dire and escalating crisis as floods relentlessly devastate our community. Concern on Climate Change for the Community Initiative (FOURCi) urgently appeals to the government and all stakeholders to take immediate action to address this critical situation.

The continuous onslaught of floods in our community has led to severe consequences, including:

1. Displacement of Families: Over the past weeks, numerous families have been forced out of their homes, leaving them homeless and vulnerable.

2. Loss of Property: Homes and personal belongings have been submerged or destroyed, causing significant financial losses to residents who are already grappling with economic challenges.

3. Threat to Lives: Lives are at risk as the floodwaters continue to rise, posing serious health and safety hazards to the community.

4. Infrastructure Damage: Roads, bridges, and critical infrastructure have been damaged, making transportation and access to essential services nearly impossible.

5. Food Insecurity: Farmlands and crops have been inundated, jeopardizing food security for the community.

FOURCi is calling on the government and stakeholders to take the following urgent actions:

1. Emergency Relief: Provide immediate relief and shelter for affected families, including food, clean water, and medical assistance.

2. Infrastructure Rehabilitation: Allocate resources for the repair and reconstruction of damaged infrastructure to restore normalcy in the community.

3. Flood Mitigation Measures: Invest in long-term flood mitigation strategies, including the construction of drainage systems and flood barriers, to prevent future disasters.

4. Community Awareness and Preparedness: Promote awareness and education on flood preparedness and response within the community.

5. Environmental Conservation: Encourage sustainable environmental practices and reforestation to reduce the risk of future flooding.

We implore the government and all relevant agencies to act swiftly to alleviate the suffering of our fellow citizens in Jimeta and Unguwan Tana. Time is of the essence, and immediate intervention is needed to save lives, protect property, and secure the future of this community.

FOURCi remains committed to working hand in hand with the government and stakeholders to address the urgent needs of our community and to develop sustainable solutions to mitigate the impact of climate change.
