FOURCi Raises Alarm as Severe Flooding Devastates Madagali/Michika Local Government Area in Adamawa State

Madagali/Michika, Adamawa State – Concern on Climate Change for the Community Initiative (FOURCi) is deeply concerned about the severe flooding that has ravaged Madagali/Michika Local Government Area in Adamawa State following heavy rainfall. The intense downpour, has caused extensive damage to homes, farmlands, access roads and critical infrastructure, disrupting the lives and livelihoods of the local population.

The flooding, which overwhelmed even the most robust culverts, has brought down structures and washed away large swathes of farmland, leaving many families without shelter or means of sustenance. “Even giant culverts couldn’t contain the flood,” said Titus Kasuwi, a resident of Michika, highlighting the severity of the disaster.

Although no fatalities have been reported, the flooding has once again exposed the vulnerability of Madagali/Michika to such natural disasters. FOURCi recalls the catastrophic flood of August 2020, which destroyed the Wuro Gayandi Bridge, a key connection between Michika and neighboring Madagali Local Government Area. The bridge collapse not only claimed two lives but also disrupted movement and economic activities in the region.

As a leading organization committed to addressing climate change and its impacts on communities, FOURCi urges the Adamawa State Government, federal agencies, and international partners to take immediate and long-term measures to mitigate the effects of such recurrent disasters. “The repeated flooding incidents in Madagali/Michika underline the urgent need for comprehensive climate resilience and adaptation strategies,” said Gabriel Bala Abraham, Country Executive Director of FOURCi.

FOURCi is calling on all stakeholders to support these initiatives. The organization emphasizes the importance of community-based approaches in building resilience against climate-related disasters and ensuring sustainable recovery and gentrification.

Governor Amadu Umaru Fintiri has expressed concern over the recurring floods in Madagali/Michika and has assured the public of the government’s commitment to supporting those affected. FOURCi will continue to work closely with local authorities and other partners to provide necessary assistance and advocate for stronger climate action.

Together, we can help rebuild and strengthen our communities against the challenges posed by climate change.
